Abstract

This study was conducted with the aim of accurately identifying the flood potential in the hydrological units of the Varzeghan-Chai watershed and providing efficient management solutions, using the MACBETH multi-criteria decision-making model. In order to conduct this study, 14 geomorphometric and climatic indicators were examined to analyze and evaluate the flood severity of sub-basins. These indicators include area, number and rank of watercourses, watercourse length, drainage density and texture, infiltration number, watercourse frequency, compaction coefficient, circularity ratio, shape coefficient, elevation, slope, and precipitation. The final weighting results showed that sub-basins 5, 11, and 2 had the highest weight with coefficients of 0.264, 0.184, and 0.145, respectively, and as a result, they have the highest flood sensitivity. In contrast, sub-basin number 7 has the lowest weight with a coefficient of 0.0054 and shows the lowest level of flood sensitivity. Of the total of 12 sub-basins, 3 sub-basins are in the "very high" category, 2 sub-basins in the "high" category, 2 sub-basins in the "medium" category, 2 sub-basins in the "low" category, and 3 sub-basins in the "very low" category in terms of flood sensitivity. Spatial findings show that about 268.83 square kilometers of the basin area is in the "high" and "very high" categories, which is equivalent to 66 percent of the total basin area. Also, 27.4 square kilometers of the basin land is in the "medium" category, which is 6.7 percent of the total basin area. In contrast, about 98.09 square kilometers are in the "low" and "very low" categories.
